“As You Were”

September 19 – October 10, 2002

Reception: Thursday September 19th, 6:30pm, Artist talk at 7pm.

Rick Arnitz’ current tool of choice is a paint roller. He calls the paint roller “a mechanical mediator between the hand and the canvas,” expressive, but with limitations. The viewer is intrigued and drawn into the work by its apparent lack of content, then held by the transfixing textures and ubiquitous rhythms of variation. The titles challenge the viewer to connect what they observe to possible meanings. As Rick states, “It is semi-abstract art”—halfway to serious meaning. I ask the viewers to meet me there.”

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Rick Arnitz lived through the 1960’s in Los Angeles. He earned his B. A., M. A., and M. F. A. degrees at UC Berkeley. Currently the Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco represents Rick Arnitz. Arnitz’ has been throughout California, in Texas, Massachusetts, New York, and Oregon, and internationally with a solo exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark. His work has been written about in numerous art publications. Rick Arnitz is represented in multiple public collections throughout California, as well as in Vancouver and Des Moine Iowa.
